What we do

A good gravel driveway relies on several engineering fundamentals to ensure its stability, longevity, and functionality. With our expertise we ensure each of the fundamental steps are followed.

We will:

  • meticulously prepare the sub-base for a stable foundation
  • strategically install drainage solutions  through site assessment and consultation
  • provide you with suitable gravel options
  • ensure sufficient gravel depth to deliver the correct profile
  • compact the gravel using a vibratory roller
  • ensure gravel moisture content is sufficient to ensure compaction.

Each driveway is  unique, and we understand how to execute these fundamentals in all environments. Read on to learn more about driveway fundamentals and have a look at our equipment.

How to care for your new driveway

Driveway fundamentals

Sub-base preparation

Sub-base preparation

Sub-base preparation

The sub-base, is the stable foundation beneath the finished gravel surface. It is properly graded and compacted to provide an elevated and stable foundation for the driveway. Vegetation, loose soil, and debris are removed during this process.

Drainage

Sub-base preparation

Adequate drainage is crucial to prevent water buildup and erosion. Adequate drainage is ensured by sloping the driveway appropriately, allowing water to drain away from the surface. Additional measures like culverts, ditches, or gravel swales may be incorporated to manage water flow and prevent pooling.

Gravel selection

Gravel selection

High-quality gravel options are provided, with a mix of sizes and colours including larger stones for stability and smaller ones for compaction. Angular gravel with interlocking properties is used for better stability.

Gravel depth

Gravel selection

The gravel is installed at a suitable depth to provide ample support and prevent rutting. The gravel depth ensures surface durability, rut prevention, weed control and water control.

Compaction

Compaction

Compaction of the gravel layers is crucial during installation to ensure stability and longevity. Compaction increases the stability of the driveway by reducing the voids space between the gravel particles. Along with increased stability, it creates a smooth surface making for a comfortable driving experience and contributes to water run-off, reducing the risk of standing water.

Moisture

Compaction

Moisture plays a crucial role in achieving compaction and stability. The correct moisture content allows the gravel particles to bind together creating a more stable and solid surface. This interlocking effect increases the load bearing capability of the driveway making it more resistant to deformation and erosion.
